History

Our Beginning
 
Proud subsidiary of Sentara Healthcare, whose roots in health care go back to 1888 and the founding of Norfolk Retreat for the Sick (now known as Sentara Norfolk General Hospital).
 
Founded in 1986 as an outgrowth of Sentara First Step, a corporation created in response to the nation's first CHAMPUS mental health managed care project; provided behavioral health coverage for more than 250,000 military dependents in Virginia.

A nationally recognized leader in managed behavioral health care, with a proven track record of providing quality care in the least restrictive environment while containing costs.
 
One of Virginia's largest behavioral health organizations, serving nearly one million members in areas of Virginia, Washington DC/Baltimore, North Carolina and West Virginia.
 
Customers include HMO, PPO and POS health plans, PHOs and employer groups.
